We Care Food Pantry received a surprise Monday afternoon when Bryan College donated 520 food items. PCI , Spiritual Formation and Enactus all donated their money, management or distribution capabilities to the week long event.
Students were able to build a castle out of cans and food that they donated in order to support We Care’s added demand for food this holiday season. For those students who could not go to their local groceries store there was a table set up with pre-bought food that could be purchased for as low as 50 cents.
This is the second year in a row that Bryan has hosted the food drive for We Care and serves as one of the initiatives that PCI and special projects leader Jeremy Rardin is trying to make an annual Thanksgiving tradition according to an interview with Rardin. The food drive was much more successful this year, having raised more than the cumulative amount last year in one day says Rardin.
Last year the drive was prompted at the request of We Care, however this year the event was held at the suggestion of Rardin in a PCI meeting some weeks ago according to Ben Norquist, director of faith and mission.
PCI is starting a new initiative to work as a whole in order to organize and execute larger events more efficiently. One of the broad strategies of PCI in general is to get the campus involved in the surrounding community as well as cultivate the students involved said Norquist,.
Enactus also played a part in the event as part of their Lets Can Hunger initiative from Campbells. Benedikt Müller, head of Project Phoenix, who is leading the Lets Can Hunger initiative, said they realized that there are different initiatives with similar goals here on campus and saw it as an opportunity. Enactus will be teaming up with other groups as opportunities present themselves in order to combine efforts and get more accomplished, said Müller.
