Getting Started in The Gym

When most people decide to make lifestyle changes, the gym is an area that many want to find a rhythm in. For one reason or another, it can be difficult to begin in the gym. Finding a routine can be a struggle, especially when mental blocks are in the way.

Confidence is often the first issue when deciding to start in the gym. This internal battle is the first barrier that needs to be conquered for the process to begin. Whether you’re struggling with body confidence, comparing yourself to others, or if you simply don’t know where to begin, it’s important to remember that everyone started in the same place. Every successful transformation has a humble beginning. Possessing a strong mental front will allow you to block out the external factors that are holding you back. In a practical way, going to the gym with a friend, a set plan and a specific time are all ways of easing in and getting comfortable.

One of the next most difficult problems is finding a way to solidify your workout routine. According to a study from the European Journal of Social Psychology, it takes anywhere from 21 days to 66 days to form a habit. So, with this in mind, consistency is vital at the beginning of this process. Setting goals, and pushing yourself are key to achieving this routine.

Lastly, one of the most commonly overlooked areas when starting in the gym is the use of online resources and those around you. There are thousands of programs, starter guides and role models to follow online and across social media. YouTube.com is a great place to find ideas, research or even motivation.
