Women’s softball splits double-header

Bryan softball split a double-header yesterday, March 29, with Tennessee Wesleyan (Athens, Tenn.), winning the first game 5-4 and falling short in the second 10-2. The Lady Lions are now sitting at 9 and 25 on the season with a 2-4 conference record.

In the first game the Lady Lions jumped out to 1-0 lead in the first inning. Tennessee Wesleyan pulled ahead 2-1 in the third inning, and both teams scored in the fourth and fifth inning taking the game to 4-3 going into the sixth. The Lady Lions held TWC in the sixth and scored two in the bottom of the seventh to walk away with the first game win.

Sophomore Taylor Yates had one RBI with three hits on the game while sophomores Rachel Kirby and Britney Hurst both had one RBI and two hits a-piece. Junior Kristie Jennings also recorded one RBI and one hit. Hurst hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh.

Sophomore Amber Love recorded the win for the first game. Love conceded four runs, three of them earned.

Game two, TWC went up 3-0 in the second inning. The Lady Lions scored one in the bottom of the second, but TWC scored again in the third, added four in the fourth and one in the fifth. Bryan scored one more in the fifth, and TWC ended it in six by going ahead eight, ending the game 10-2.

Hurst had two RBIs in game two and one hit while Kirby, Jennings, Yates, junior Erica Winfrey and freshman Haley Johnson all recorded hits. Love started in the circle for Bryan in game two as well, giving up three runs and earning the loss. Junior Shanna Chappel came in pitching the third and part of the fourth. Freshman Rozlyn Roberts came in and pitched the fifth and sixth.

“We are playing well,” said head coach Rocky Stinson. “I feel if we can get on a bit of a streak we can do some real damage in conference and overall have us setting up for a good run at the postseason. We are starting to put together hits, and out defense is solid.”

Bryan plays again today in a conference doubleheader at Bluefield College at 3:00pm. They play again on Saturday at Union College at 2 pm. and then they play in another conference.
