The junior Student Government Association underwent many changes during the summer. Junior Aaron Heidorn stepped down from being president, and former junior Josh Ragland and junior Trevor Haught resigned from their positions because they were overcommitted.

Due to Heidorn’s resignation, junior Sarah Becker, who was elected to vice president, will be serving as president.

Heidorn steps down as junior president

When asked about why he would not be president of the junior class this year, Heidorn was hesitant to answer.

“The answer to that [question] is a really long one,” he said. “If anyone does want to know then they can come to me personally and I’d be happy to discuss it.”

He said that even though it is not “ideal” that Becker will be president, because she did not run for the position, he does think she will do a good job because she is “very capable.”

Heidorn said that he is excited for next semester because he believes he will serve as male senator when junior Brian Livingston, who was appointed by Becker as Haught’s replacement, leaves to study abroad in Italy next semester.

“I see a lot of good stuff coming because they (SGA) are going to be involving the student body a lot and giving back,” he said. “And Junior-Senior is gonna rock!”

Haught drops position as male senator

Junior Trevor Haught decided to step down from his position as male senator about mid-July.

He said he realized that he had overcommitted himself because he is taking 18 hours. He is also involved in Students in Service, French club and rugby club and is working this semester.

“If I had stayed on with SGA, I would have had to slack off on something,” Haught said. “And I couldn’t slack off on work or school.”

He said that last semester when he ran he did not realize he would have to be working during the school year but needs the money for school.

Haught said he believes that Livingston is a good pick for male senator.

“Livingston will definitely represent the class well,” Haught said. “He has a broader view of the class because he’s an athlete and involved.”

Ragland drops position as junior treasurer

Now senior Josh Ragland decided to run last year for junior class treasurer because he said he wanted to serve his class with skills he had acquired as a business major and to gain experience working with people.

Over the summer, changes occurred in Ragland’s life, which caused him to decide he could no longer be the treasurer. He got engaged to Bryan alumnus Lauren Simpson in mid-July, and decided to graduate a year early.

Ragland is currently taking 24 hours this semester, 20 at Bryan and four at Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge).

He said he did not believe that he could perform his job well considering the time commitment, and discussed it with the Junior SGA. They agreed that if he felt overbooked, then it would be best if he dropped.

Becker as Ragland’s replacement appointed Junior James Baird.

“James is a good replacement,” Ragland said. “He has a good character and is honest and respectable.”

Becker said she found out about the change from Heidorn in late May and from Haught and Ragland in mid-July. She said at first she was not happy about the changes but is now excited about it.

“Over the summer, all the qualities I had that I thought would be great as a vice president started to lessen in my personality, and all the qualities I thought I didn’t have to be president started to come out,” she said. “And I was amazed by God’s provision for me.”

Becker, as president, said she was responsible for appointing the new members to SGA when Ragland and Haught dropped out in the middle of summer.

The new team includes junior Shannon McGowan as vice president, Livingston as male senator, junior Jessica Jones as female senator, Baird as treasurer and junior Sarah Jo Wood as administrative assistant.

Becker said she is excited about the new team because each member has individual goals that they are passionate about and they now have the money and respect to accomplish these goals.

“”We’re all in it for the right reason,” she said. “We have the power to help, and we’re very determined.”
