The Henning Museum of Natural History hosted its second annual Nature Art Show this past week.  The show opened March 12 with 36 pieces of art ranging from photographs to painting to drawings.  Students, faculty and staff were encouraged to stop by, enjoy the art and vote for their favorites.

The entries included many different aspects of nature.  Visitors of the art show saw photographs, paintings and drawings of flowers, frogs, trees and much more.

There were three prizes to be awarded for the winners in three divisions: students, faculty and staff, and People’s Choice.  The judges were Nela Swiney of Dayton City School, Chris Hoose of Rhea County High School, Dr. Todd Wood, associate professor of science, and Elaine Davis, instructor of art, both of Bryan College.  The awards were presented on March 15 at 3 p.m. in the museum.

The first place prize for students went to sophomore Hannah Coleman.  After hearing about the show in her Digital Imaging class, Coleman decided to enter her picture at the urging of her roommate.  The photo shows a daffodil after a rain shower with a faded bridge in the background.

Dr. Brian Eisenback, assistant professor of biology, took home the prize for the faculty and staff category.  While driving through the Sierra Mountains in California with his wife, Eisenback snapped the picture from the car window while traveling about 40 mph.

“It was one of those moments where I knew it would be a great picture before I even took it,” he said.

The People’s Choice award was given to senior Alexandria Youngs.  Her piece, “Swallowed Up,” depicts a lion and is a representation of Youngs’ desire to “explore different techniques and ways to do art.”

All three winners said they were impressed with the other entries.

“I thought that [the other entries] were nice,” said Coleman. “[I] left wondering if I had a chance.”

“All the other entries were great,” said Eisenback.  “For me it is exciting seeing the artwork of students I know, and I was impressed with the overall quality.”

“I was very impressed by the skill and talent that was present in the art show,” said Youngs.
