At noon Feb. 1, 2013, the college recognized President Dr. Steven Livesay for his 10 years of leading the college.
Vice president of the student body Joseph Murphy presented an award to Livesay in the cafeteria in front of students, and the Vice Presidents of the school.
“We’d like to present you with an award, and what better than an award that one you can eat too,” Murphy said. “So we actually have a cake.”
Pioneer Food Service presented Livesay with a cake and Dayton Mayor Bob Vincent spoke about the college’s relationship with the town.
When Vincent served in the military at Fort Jackson, S.C., residents didn’t want soldiers downtown.
And when he grew up in Greenville, S.C.—the same town as Bob Jones University—the relationship between the college and the town was almost non-existent.
“I’ve got to confess, I hardly knew the college was there,” Vincent said. “I’m very happy to say today that it’s not the situation we have here in Dayton. The relation between the college and the community is at a very high level and a lot of that, of course, goes to Bryan College and the leadership of Dr. Livesay.”
While the planners of the luncheon tried to keep it a surprise, Livesay had his suspicions.
People who didn’t normally email him were contacting him, and there was an appointment on his calendar—a luncheon. Livesay said he never remembered scheduling a luncheon.
“I can’t tell you how grateful I am,” he said.
Livesay said he was not expecting any kind of recognition.
His secretaries Margie Legg and Alice Gray told him, “Well, just enjoy it.”
Livesay said he wanted to also recognize his wife, Corrinne Livesay because she is instrumental in the school, with her strength and talent.
“I always get the front line, but she really deserves the attention,” Livesay said. “I think she’s not going to be noticed as much, but she’s brilliant.”
