Bryan girls frantic for banquet dates

Even though the Sadie Hawkins Christmas banquet theme was just announced Nov. 12, banquet invitations have been going on for over two weeks.

Casey Currin invited fellow freshman Evan Fortune to the banquet on Oct. 29.

“I asked so early because I wanted to ask during open dorm, and every single weekend leading up to banquet is completely busy for me as far as academics and activities,” said Currin.

“I think a lot of girls are asking early because there are obviously more girls than guys, and there have already been cases of more than one girl asking the same guy,” she added.

There are approximately 404 girls and 320 guys attending at Bryan.

Currin bought a stuffed frog and a Disney “Princess and the Frog” gift bag, made a paper crown and used green paper to create a lily pad-shaped card.

The card said, “Of all the froggies in the lake, you are the prince I want to take. Will you go to banquet with me?”

During girl’s open dorm, Currin invited a group of friends to her room where she planned to give Fortune the gift bag with the invitation. However, Fortune ended up going off campus during open dorm, so Currin recruited freshman Tyler Cruver, Fortune’s roommate, to deliver the gift bag to their dorm room.

“I promptly got a text at 1:20 a.m. when Evan got back saying that he would go with me,” said Currin.

Two days later, freshman Gerleen Dineros asked freshman Scott Rieckhoff on Nov. 1.

“I asked early because I wanted to get it over with and because I figured that someone else might ask him if I didn’t do it soon,” said Dineros.

She copied a page from a calculus book and highlighted the letters to spell out the message “Will you go to banquet with me? Meet me at the ping pong tables on Nov. 8th @ 11:30 p.m.”

However, on the same day that Dineros mailed her invitation to Rieckhoff, a second girl made a cheesecake and invited him to the banquet too.

Rieckhoff said yes to Dineros the next morning because she had asked him first.

Alaina Woodall asked fellow senior representative Thomas Katz to the banquet on Oct. 27.

She said that she asked so early because she knew that they would be planning the banquet with SGA in November and she wanted to ask before they got too busy.

Several of the girls asked early because there are fewer guys at school and it would be awkward to go with a guy that they do not know well, according to Woodall. Also, girls generally are more organized and plan their asking in advance rather than waiting until the last minute to invite their dates.

The Masquerade banquet is planned for Dec. 4 at the Dayton National Guard Armory.
