Students, faculty, and staff got their first look at a brand new piece of furniture in the Lion’s Den of Latimer Student Center. The Class of 2009 has given an oversized couch that doubles as a stage, for its senior gift.

Brett Meyers, president of last year’s Senior Class, said that when SGA seniors thought of what they could leave behind, they thought of Ponderosa Bible Camp in Mentone, Ala.

Several SGA retreats have been at Ponderosa, where a giant couch sits in one of the meeting rooms. SGA seniors wanted to give Bryan a similar couch for several years, but only now have they been able to make it happen.

After presenting the idea to the Senior Class, Meyers said senior SGA members met with Bryan alumnus Tony McCuiston, head of product development at La–Z–Boy Tenn. McCuiston agreed to build it and said he and several other employees have been working on it in their spare time all summer.

Though McCuiston said he had hoped to have the project completed by the end of August, summer busyness delayed its completion. They recently finished the couch by upholstering its three cushions, which can be removed from the couch to create a small stage, measuring 8 feet long by 4 feet wide.

According to Meyers, McCuiston and others will be moving the couch into the Lions’ Den tomorrow. Because of its size, the couch has to be brought in three pieces and assembled in the Lion’s Den, where it will be waiting for everyone to enjoy.
