Baseball splits in double header

The Bryan College Lions split a double header with the Point Park University (Pittsburgh, Pa.) Pioneers Friday evening. The Lions dropped game one 4-2 and won game two 8-6.

In game one, both teams scored a run in the third inning. Point Park would go on to score two more runs in the fourth to put them up 3-1 over Bryan. The Lions would add another run at the bottom of the fifth. The Pioneers added their final run at the top of the seventh.

Freshman designated hitter Ethan Lents, junior center fielder Kevin Roberts, sophomore left fielder Crandon Wallace, and senior short stop Grant Zawadzki had one hit a piece. Sophomore second baseman Cody Rhinehart scored both of the Lions’ runs.

Sophomore pitcher LJ Rowden pitched the first five innings for the Lions and gave up three runs, two earned, and four hits. He also struck out nine batters. Junior pitcher Kenny Knudsen finished out the final two innings for the Lions. During his time on the mound, Knudsen struck out three batter and gave up one unearned run and two hits.

During the second game, The Lions’ started off the scoring with three runs in the first inning and one run in the second. The Pioneers would score two runs at the top of third, but the Lions would add three more runs at the bottom of the inning to put them ahead 7-2. Bryan would add their final run in the fourth inning from a homerun by senior third baseman Tyler Latham. Point Park scored two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.

Zawadzki led the Lions with two RBIs, two hits, and one run. Roberts recorded two RBIs and one hit. Wallace finished with one RBI, two hits, and one run. Rhinehart had one RBI and two hits. Latham had one RBI, one hit, and two runs. Sophomore right fielder Preston King had two hits and one run. Lents had one hit and one run. Sophomore first baseman Justin Morhardt and freshman catcher Garrison Price each scored one run. Junior pitcher Joey Underwood started on the mound for the Lions and gave up three hits, two runs in two and two-thirds innings. Junior pitcher John Cain finished pitching the third inning and pitched the fourth and fifth. During his time on the mound he gave up one hit and two runs and struck out four batters. Junior pitcher Brannon Shortt threw for two-thirds of the sixth inning where he gave up two hits and two runs. Knudsen finished on the mound for the Lions and gave up one hit and struck out three batters.

The Lions, now 5-8 for the season, will once again face the Pioneers Saturday afternoon. Game time is scheduled for 1p.m.
