Bryan College held its annual Homeschool Event this past Monday Feb. 6, 2017 by inviting homeschoolers to experience college atmosphere.
They were greeted by faculty and students at 9:00 a.m. and listened to Christian studies professor Samuel Youngs, who shared about his own experience as a homeschooler and extolled the value of Bryan’s unique blend of academics and community life.
“It’s important that we reach out to homeschoolers. They represent diligent, academically oriented, spiritually-rooted young people who would make excellent Bryan students.”
The homeschoolers had a chance to attend chapel followed by a question and answer panel. Provided with a tasty lunch, the homeschoolers got a chance to connect with faculty and learn their perspective on Bryan.
To further show the homeschoolers what life at Bryan is like they then chose to tour campus, go to various interest meetings, or sit in on a college class.
Homeschooler Katrina Ingalls from Elizabethtown, Kentucky felt impressed with the overall atmosphere of Bryan.
She said there’s a real sense of community being on campus and she had only good experiences with the people she met. Katrina also commented on the impact having lunch with the professors and sitting in on an interactive class had on her.
She said her favorite part was visiting Professor Legg’s Intro to Creative Writing class. “Everyone here is friendly and welcoming. I really liked sitting in on creative writing,” said Ingalls, “The professor is great and the class seems like it’s fun. I’m thinking about going into creative writing or English so I’m glad I got to see what it’s really like.”
Overall the event was a success. Pat Wesolowski, Bryan’s homeschool specialist, said homeschoolers filled the Rhea County room. She feels it’s important to reach out to homeschoolers because it allows them to have contact with a real guidance counselor and have help navigating college.
Much of the feedback Wesolowski got from the homeschoolers and their parents was positive. They were happy with the friendliness of faculty and students as well as the over all Christ-centered vision of the college.
Wesolowski said, “Many families are not familiar with Bryan College at all, but when they visit they see first hand the heart of the faculty and staff, the beautiful campus, and the many advantages of getting an education here.”
Campus correspondent Samantha Burgess is a freshman majoring in communication. Burgess is actively involved in PCI.
