Senior Gustavo Angel Tamayo went to the Late Night Roar expecting to have a good time with friends and walked away the winner of a $10,000 scholarship.

The Late Night Roar was held Monday night as a kick-off event for basketball season. The event included a contest to win $10,000 in scholarship money by making a lay-up,  free throw, a 3-pointer and a half-court shot in under 30 seconds.

Tamayo, who said he has no basketball experience, made all four shots just shy of the 30 second mark.

He said he realized he had a chance to win the contest after he made the 3-pointer. He described the moment he made winning shot as “an amazing feeling to share with the Bryan community.”

According to Basketball Coach Don Rekoske, this was a very tough contest to win.

Tamayo, who plays on the men’s soccer team, said many of his friends have jokingly told him he should give up soccer and pursue basketball.

He said his tuition is covered for the rest of his time at Bryan, so he will be meeting with his mentors on campus and deciding on the wisest way to use his winnings.

Since Monday night, Tamayo has appeared on several national media outlets, including ESPN and NBC.

He said he is happy about the influx of positive media attention his big win has brought the school.
