The Lions’ final regular season match Saturday, Sept. 29 against the Bluefield (Va.) College Rams ended with a 4–0 win.
Senior defender and team captain Harry Sherwood, in under the first 10 minutes of the game, scored the first goal with an assist from junior midfielder Tom Hemmings. The second goal was scored by sophomore midfielder Jorge Gonzalez and assisted by freshman midfielder Gustavo Angel within five minutes of the first goal.
This game was the first time Sherwood had played in four weeks due to a leg injury.
“It was nice to have him back. He played a total of about 20 minutes – 25 at the most,” said coach Sandy Zensen. “He gave us a little extra punch up top.”
At halftime the score stood at 2–0, meaning all that the Lions had to do was score two more goals to meet their target (a win by 4) in order to host the first round of the conference tournament.
“It was a fairly good game. We scored two goals early,” sophomore defender Rasheed Malcolm said. “[The game] got frustrating because it got physical, but we kept our composure.”
Eight minutes into the second half Sherwood scored another goal, assisted by junior midfielder Johannes Muller. Then, Muller scored the fourth and final goal of the game with an assist from junior defender Jordan Devlin.
The Lions host the next game, the quarterfinal round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament, against Union College Saturday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m., which should prove to be interesting since the two teams tied 2 -2 in a previous game this season.
