For a lot of college students, coffee is the lifeline that helps them through long morning classes, massive research papers, and lonely all-nighters.

They have a variety of coffee shops across Dayton to choose from, especially with the recent installments of a Scooter’s and a Dunkin on Rhea County Highway. Between Common Grounds, drive-thru places and local cafés, Bryan College students have developed a strong coffee culture. A recent poll gives insight into that culture.

Students were asked which coffee shops were their favorites and why. This poll reveals the staggering tie between Drip—a sleek, part-café, part drive-thru—and Jennings—a cozy local café. Dunkin’ takes second place prize, while Harmony House takes third.

Many students, when asked, wrote highly of Jennings’ quality coffee and atmosphere. “The atmosphere at Jennings is always so calming and welcoming. I don’t feel rushed to get in and out; I love to sit and chat with my friends there.”

Another anonymous user wrote, “Jennings is my favorite for several reasons. One is that I prefer their espresso to anywhere else in town; they get good beans and teach their baristas proper coffee theory, so the espresso and drip coffee taste better. I also enjoy the atmosphere – it’s a good spot to get some work done or chat with friends. Finally, I appreciate the employees and their friendly, personable service.”

Drip is not without its vocal fans. “Drip is versatile and convenient,” writes one user. “Good range of drinks, good drive-thru, pleasant sit-down experience with comfy seats and a nice radio; it’s always a dependably good experience.”

According to this poll, the most popular drinks to get are mochas, with chai and medium roasts close behind in second place.

Types of creamers were also taken into account, and students were asked about their favorite types of milk for their drink. Unsurprisingly in this corner of the often-sweltering South, 69% of students prefer iced coffees over hot ones, of which 31% of students prefer. 69% of students also prefer to sit inside the coffee shop to enjoy their drink, while 31% prefer taking their coffees to go.

While students have a wide variety of drinks and shops they enjoy, Dayton’s local cafés have clearly won the hearts of many Bryan students.
