Can’t touch this: Zune rivals Apple’s iTouch

The Zune HD, the next generation of MP3 players from Microsoft, is now available for pre-order from Amazon.com, Best Buy, Wal-Mart and Microsoft. Two different models of the Zune HD are up for grabs, the black 16GB and platinum 32GB. Both are marketed to be available by their launch date of Sept. 15.

Microsoft has finally produced their touchscreen MP3 which is capable of web-browsing, tuning into digital radio stations and playing high-definition (HD) movies. The release is a clear shot at Apple’s iTouch.

With the glass OLED touchscreen that measures in at 3.3 inches, the Zune allows the user to sweep through their music library and browse the web with the touch of a finger. While the OLED screen does not support HD video playback, it can be hooked up to an HDtv with the help of a special Zune docking cable and produce video playback on a 720p level.

Along with this HD advancement in video, the Zune HD also has HD radio capabilities, allowing the user to access digital information being broadcasted from radio stations in a clearer format with less interference. HD radio reception will come at no extra cost to the user.
Aside from all the technical aspects of the device, a 16GB platinum Zune will cost an estimated retail price of $219.99 while its 32GB counterpart will run for $289.99. The Zune HD undercuts the iTouch by nearly $100.00 and is a clear shot at the Apple MP3 player.

The Zune HD is available for pre-order now but will hit markets on Sept. 15, 2009 and will be available in five different colors with the option to customize the player with one of 10 new engravings designed by guest artists.
