Student Events Council Holds First Formal of School Year

DAYTON, Tenn.–Saturday, Nov. 7 from 6:00-9:00 p.m., the Student Events Council (SEC) hosted the first formal banquet of the 2020-2021 academic year in the Bryan College campus triangle for all Bryan students after missing the campus banquet last year.

The spy-themed banquet, that was inspired by the James Bond film series, began with a scavenger hunt that led participating students around campus. The prize for each member of the winning table was a $25 gift card.

Freshman SEC member Ashley Walker, commented regarding the theme of the event, “In all honesty, we met as per usual and came up with some quick ideas: Disney, Jurassic Park, Spy, etc. We came to the agreement that the spy theme was uncommon and easy to decorate.”

While decorating according to the theme was easy, the SEC was challenged by Covid-19 limitations. To ensure the observation of the Covid-19 safety precautions set by the college, the banquet had to be held outside. Proper social-distancing was also required.

“The largest problem was finding six foot round tables. Few companies carry that size; in fact, we had to use two separate companies to obtain enough tables,” Walker said. (Pictured left: socially-distanced table set up at the banquet)

Despite the difficulties, the SEC pushed to hold the banquet to give students a break amid the condensed semester.

Administrative assistant Abigail Buttram said, “In a year where so many things are different and new, the SEC desired to provide an event that allowed students to feel ‘normal.’ The objective was for students to have fun, to provide an opportunity to dress up, and to encourage students for the final push of the semester.”

In addition to this banquet, the SEC plans to host a junior-senior formal, but a final decision is yet to be determined.
