Imagine being born deaf; unable to hear the sounds of another person’s voice. The only means you have of communicating with a hearing person is though sign language and lip-reading.

Deaf people often create tight knit groups with other deaf and ASL signers to build their own community. However, in a small town like Dayton, there is not a predominate deaf presence to create that community. Read full story »

OSL comments limited in Tromanhauser case

By now, everyone on campus knows about the suspension of freshman Mark Tromanhauser over the possession of a can of beer at the beginning of the term. Dozens of his friends petitioned the Office of Student Life for him to stay but their efforts were unsuccessful.

However, there is more to the story than meets the eye. Bryan disciplined Tromanhauser over more than merely the possession of alchohol. According to the suspension letter that Tromanhauser received, the college suspended him for “violating Bryan College policies related to possession/use of alcohol and dishonesty while already on Disciplinary Probation.”

The college placed Tromanhauser on Disciplinary Probation because of his actions last semester.

This semester, he was discovered with the beer when two students found the beer in a cooler in his room and contacted his RA, junior Luke Lillard.

Tromanhauser said he views the student’s act as trespassing and violating of his privacy and that he was unaware that these students had entered his room.

“It should not have been discovered the way it was discovered,” said Lillard.

However, once it was discovered, Matt Williams, Tromanhauser’s residence director, was forced to confront the issue.

“We can’t ignore it if something comes up,” Williams said.

Traumanhauser was open with his friends about the suspension process and they rallied to support him when he decided to appeal the college’s decision to suspend him. Read full story »

Tromanhauser suspended

Suspension is not news. Forty-one names on a petition to keep a friend from being suspended is, and that was precisely the situation the Bryan College administration was confronted with on Tuesday, Jan. 25.

Freshman Mark Tromanhauser was questioned at an official hearing on Tuesday for violating the long-standing rule that students are not allowed to have alcoholic beverages on campus. According to Tromanhauser, the beverage was an unopened 12 oz. can of beer that was discovered in his room by another student and presented to his RA.

The situation was brought to light on Monday. Senior Peter Fastenau drafted a petition to present to Dean of Community Life Bruce Morgan in hope that Tromanhauser would not be suspended. Forty-one students, including Fastenau, signed the petition.

However, despite these efforts, Tromanhauser was still suspended for the entirety of this semester.

Tromanhauser said Tuesday night that he specifically wanted to thank his professor, Dr. Peter Held, senior fellow for Christian worldview, for seeing him “through thick and thin.” He also thanked Fastenau, along with freshman Luke Harris and junior Timothy Baldi for “guiding” him through the situation.

Tromanhauser said he wanted to make the following statement to his fellow students at Bryan as a reminder to keep each other accountable to the rules of the college:

“Keep your eyes open. When you see something wrong, point it out.”

Fastenau said that while he was disappointed with the outcome, he trusts God that everything will be done according to His will.

There will be more details posted online regarding this story in next week’s issue of Triangle.
