Mardi Gras took its own sweet time drifting up to Dayton this year, but it certainly was better late than never.

Last Saturday afternoon, an estimated 800 people, including Bryan students and faculty, celebrated the party affair, jazzing their way down Main Street to classic swing tunes and sultry saxophone blues.

MainStreet Dayton’s second annual family-focused event ran from 3-8 p.m. on April 9, over a month after the traditional celebration ended on March 8. This was due to the organization’s desire to not conflict with other events usually occurring within that early spring period such as Spring Break and other pre-planned community events, according to Anna Tromanhauser, MainStreet Dayton’s executive director.

This year’s festivities included swing dancing in the middle of Main Street, vocal performances by local singers Vicky Gould and Chattanooga Idol winner Josh Melton, Cajun-style cooking featured at Mansfield’s Diner, an inflatable slide furnished by Kings of Bounce and shopping at local Mardi Gras bedecked stores. Imagine 10 to 15 guys packed into a room that was originally designed for two. Now add a dozen computers and a web of Ethernet cables strung in every possible direction, and you have a pretty clear picture of a Defense of the Ancients party like the one I experienced on Long 2nd last Friday night.

Defense of the Ancients, or DotA, is a game type within the popular, if somewhat dated, Warcraft III realtime strategy game released by Blizzard Entertainment. It has recently become the favorite among PC gamers on campus who gather at least once a week to battle each other over a local area network. Read full story »

Students voice their opinion on cafeteria food

by Tim Baldi
Staff Writer

Students come from a variety of culinary backgrounds whether they were raised on fast food or on mom’s homemade cooking. Coming to college every year presents students with the task of maintaining their own diet in the cafeteria and in their dorm rooms.

What foods do you enjoy most in the cafeteria?

“I love the pizza!” said freshman Corey Heartfield.

Sophomore Lia Johnson said the sandwiches in the sub line make a nice meal, and they are a good way to get vegetable servings.

Sophomore Kelly Findley said that he enjoys the salad bar, sub line, ice cream and the chicken strips.

“Compared to other school cafeterias, the quality of the food is generally better [at Bryan],” said Findley.

Junior Dave Skinner said the chicken, salad bar and sub line are really good.

Freshman Jonathan Hernandez said he likes the chicken tenders, steak and corn nuggets. His general diet includes eating salads, sandwiches, wraps, pizza, eggs, hash browns or whatever is in the hot line. Read full story »

Policy change delays club funding

by Ericka Simpson

Distribution of club funding was delayed about three weeks because Bryan College is in the process of standardizing club rules.

The reason this funding is an issue, according to Vice President of Operations Tim Hostetler, is because if Bryan is giving the clubs money, then they are legally responsible if an accident were to occur.

“We have to look at the worst case scenario,” he said. “We don’t have issues until someone gets hurt, and we are sued.”

All of the clubs were funded this year except for Rugby, according to sophomore SGA Vice President of Finance Kelly Findley. SGA is responsible for distributing all club funds.

“We were wondering if the Rugby accident was what sparked it because the example they gave us was a roadway accident, but it’s just speculation,” Findley said. “We think the reason that we couldn’t fund them is because they are a more contact sport.” Read full story »

On Monday at about 1:30 a.m., the men of Long Dorm were awakened by the fire alarm after a fire extinguisher fell and discharged in room 317. The extinguisher had been propped against the door as a prank.

A student or a group of students also propped a stop sign and a small sectional couch from the hall against the door of the room.

Sophomore Kelly Findley opened the door to the knock of freshman Jason Ricketts, neither of whom live in the room but were studying there at the time.

The fire extinguisher fell, broke the safety pin, and blasted the white powder in Findley’s face.

“All I could see was smoke and I started coughing,” Findley said.

Within 10 seconds, the fire alarm went off, alerting everyone to move outside. The Dayton Police Department and the Dayton Fire Department arrived at the scene shortly thereafter. According to police, had anyone gotten hurt in the incident, the pranksters would have unintentionally committed a felony.

“You’re not funny!”  Matt Williams, Long resident director, told the pranksters. Read full story »
