Bryan Family,

Over the course of the last few days, several things have happened in SGA that I think deserve clarification and that we would love your feedback on moving forward. I proposed earlier this week that SGA as an entity be dissolved for the period of one year. Events would still be sponsored and planned under a specific Events Council whose positions are still voted on by the student body at-large and the respective classes. One of the main reasons for the proposed change would be to reevaluate the functions of SGA and how it could best fit with the direction of Bryan College as a whole, to clearly see the essentials that the organization provides. I remain firm in the belief that this proposal would be best for SGA and student leaders on campus, but there are many people whom I respect inside SGA and out of it that disagree with me. I believe in this change, others do not, and disagreement is not a bad thing.

The Corporate Body of SGA will have the final vote on this proposal Tuesday, Feb. 7, at the first Corporate Meeting of the semester. I understand that I have simply given an overview and not many specifics on my line of reasoning, so I encourage anyone with an opinion on this issue to please contact your representative or friends in SGA to ask questions and give thoughts.

Events council adds treasurer

Student Government Association has created a new executive treasury position, seeking to ease the load of dealing with finances within Events Council.

Junior Amy Morris and senior Chad Byers, the vice presidents of on and off-campus events, appointed junior Aaron Hunt to the unofficial position of Events Council treasurer at the beginning of  spring semester.

The new position will not be official unless senate amends the SGA constitution by the end of the semester.

According to Morris, this semester is a trial run to test the effectiveness of the office.

Events Council spends more money than class SGAs, according to Morris.  Previously, the administrative assistant or a class vice president has handled the finances of events council, but the task is not officially assigned to anyone.

According to Hunt, the position is similar to the other offices of Events Council because he helps plan events and share ideas for implementing events. However, the treasurer is different because he runs the budget, gives reports to the vice presidents of on and off-campus events and turns in receipts to reimburse students who purchase items for events.

Because Events Council has been planning more events than in past years, members of SGA decided to add a treasurer position to take care of the money and function as an extra hand, said Morris.

So far, Hunt has been involved in the planning of the Talent Show, Barbarian Wars and the Midnight Cruise.

According to Morris, the position may become the third executive office purposely filled by appointment. The vice presidents of on and off-campus events will appoint a student to fill the position next year if the trial is effective.

Barbarians return to Bryan this afternoon

The Aztecs and the Goths marched onto the practice fields prepared to slaughter their enemies by breaking eggs with their handmade cardboard weapons. They are returning for a rematch this afternoon at 5 p.m.YouTube Preview Image

Barbarian Wars, an event from last year, pitted the upperclassmen against the underclassmen in all out warfare with no real objective except to “kill” as many on the enemy side as possible. Each person had three eggs attached to himself, and if all eggs were smashed, then they were dead. Whichever team had the most people left standing at the end of the battle, kept their pride and won bragging rights.

“It is the biggest adrenaline rush that the school has ever sponsored,” junior Justus Stout said. Senior Evan Johnson asked Stout to give the rally speech for the underclassmen, and, according to Stout, it was “very exciting and empowering.”

The event created a chance for the under and upperclassmen to band together in an aggressive way. Stout said that it was a lot of fun last year, and he can’t imagine a way that it would be more fun.

Freshman Class officers and SGA Events Council have combined their planning abilities for “A Night on the Riviera” spring banquet and cruise scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 27.

SGA’s Events Council wanted to bring back the midnight cruise because of its popularity last year, according to Vice President of Off Campus Events Elijah Ammen. When the weekend of the 27th became available, they checked with freshman SGA and coordinated to have the banquet and cruise on the same night.

This is the first time two large events like this have been planned for one night, according to freshman Vice President Amy Morris.

The banquet will begin at 6 p.m. with “A Night on the Riviera.”

“We want people to see and smell the river,” said Morris. The decorations and atmosphere will create an outdoor European restaurant atmosphere.

“We plan on this banquet being classier than ordinary banquets,” said freshman Treasurer Kelly Findley. People will be able to focus on table conversation instead of the stage events.

A significant portion of the budget is being spent on providing good food, according to Findley.

“The food is going to be awesome,” said Morris.

At 10:30 p.m. after the banquet, students will begin boarding the midnight cruise, according to Ammen. The ship will leave the dock at 11 p.m. and return at 1 a.m.

There will be a wider range of activities on the two-hour cruise this year. According to Ammen, the cruise will have all the same activities that students enjoyed on last year’s cruise, in addition to a video game arcade, card games and possibly karaoke; events council is also currently searching for a jazz band to provide music for the cruise.
