Lions slash Patriots for 27th win

The Lions beat the Patriots of the University of the Cumberlands (Williamsburg, Ky.) on a walk-off homerun Tuesday night. Bryan started off leading, after a run in the first inning. The Patriots scored four in the second to give them a 4-1 lead. They added another in the third and Bryan added two in the bottom of the inning. Cumberlands scored two in the fourth while Bryan would recorded one, followed by two more in the bottom of the fifth. Both teams crossed the plate twice in the sixth and once in the seventh.

Sophomore designated hitter Justin Morhardt hit a homerun to tie the game 10-10 in the bottom of the ninth. Junior centerfielder Kevin Roberts hit a three-run homerun to give the Lions the 13-10 walk-off win. The Lions are now 27-23 for the season.

Roberts led the Lions, finishing with three RBIs, three hits and two runs. Senior right fielder Tyler Latham had one RBI, one hit and two runs. Senior shortstop Grant Zawadzki finished with two RBIs, three hits and two runs. Morhardt recorded two RBIs, two hits and one run. Sophomore left fielder Crandon Wallace had one RBI, one hit and one run. Sophomore pinch runner Brookes Jones finished with one run scored. Junior first baseman Kelvin McMiller led with three runs. McMiller also had two RBIs and one hit. Junior third baseman Joey Underwood had three hits and one run.

Senior pitcher Ike Meyers started on the mound and gave up seven hits and seven runs in three innings. Senior pitcher Brannon Shortt pitched the next two innings and allowed two hits and two runs. Freshman pitcher Ian Andrews gave up one hit during his single inning on the mound. Junior pitcher John Cain pitched next and allowed two hits and one run during his two innings. Freshman pitcher Jared Breazeale finished the game for the Lions and did not give a hit or a run to earn the win.

The Lions play again at home on Friday as they host Virginia Intermont College (Bristol, Va.). The nine-inning game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
