Bryan Lions Beat Bluefield Rams

DAYTON, Tenn — Bryan Lions baseball devoured the Bluefield Rams over a two day game series on Mar. 8-9. Entering the series, the Lions and the Rams were No. 1 and 2 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. After three games, the Lions proved that they are No. 1 in the AAC.

Over the three games, the Lions scored a total of 26 runs leaving the Rams with only three. On Thursday, the Lions finished the Rams 10-0. They topped the Rams again on Friday 5-1 and 11-2. The Lions record improved to 20-3 overall with 6-0 in conference, while bringing the Rams record to 9-7 and 0-6 in the AAC.

The Lions outhit the Rams 17-4. Lake Burris (JR, Chatsworth, Ga.), and Cody Young (SR, Collierville, Tenn.) led the Lions with three hits apiece. Fernando Garcia (SR, Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) matched Young with three RBI’s as Garcia went 2 for 4 with a homerun and a double. Rodney Tennie (SR, Newman, Ga.), Trevor Behrent (SR, Catawissa, Pa.) and Jacob Justice (SO, Ringgold, Ga.) each had two hits respectively. Wade Weinburger (SO, James Cistern, Bahamas), David Scoggins (JR, Marietta, Ga.) and Tyler Scott (SO, Calgary, Alberta) ended with one hit apiece. Burris and Young hit homeruns, Behrent hit a double and both Tennie and Scott stole a base.

In game two–the first game on Friday– there was a dominating performance by the Lions pitcher Luke Henderson (SR, Auburn, Ga.) who collected his sixth win of the season. Henderson pitched eight innings, ending with five hits and one run surrendered to the Rams. He walked no one and struck out five. Henderson was relieved by Jesus Astudillo (JR, Caracas, Venezuela) who ended the ninth with no runs.

In the last game of the series, Garcia had a team high with three RBI’s, two runs, one double and one homerun. Tennie, Weinburger, Tucker Cain (JR, Lebanon, Tenn.) and Young each had two hits apiece. Young and Weinburger had three RBI’s and Weinburger had the most runs out of any Lion, ending with three. Cain had a double on each of his hits. Young hit a double and a homerun and Weinburger had a homerun.

Next game for the Lions is on Mar. 30 starting at 3:00 p.m.
