Tenebrae is a service designed to observe the crucifixion, especially the seven betrayals and the suffering of Christ leading up to his death.

“…[Tenebrae] focuses on the different aspects/shadows of Christ’s road to the cross–such as His betrayal, denial, accusation, suffering, crucifixion, etc,” said Jonathan Doran, director of counseling and soul care.

“For us to be able to appreciate the glory of Resurrection Day, we must go through the agony and suffering of the cross,” said Doran. “This is why a Tenebrae service can help the college campus become part of God’s redemptive story for us.”

“I liked the chance to just sit and worship and meditate without it being chapel,” said sophomore Ashley Toth. “It was easier to focus on the worship and easier to meditate on things because it wasn’t a class – it wasn’t required, there were no announcements, and people weren’t chatting through it because they wanted to be there. I wish that we would have stuff like this on occasion rather than forcing chapel so often.”
