Mock Interview Day 2017 was a learning experience for the 20 students who attended, according to Luke Morris, director of Career services.
“I heard students share how helpful and encouraging their experience was,” said Morris. “ I also spoke with our interviewers and they had very positive things to say about the students they interviewed.”
Tanner Stockton, a junior politics and government major, interviewed for a legislative internship with the Tennessee government. Stockton learned there’s room to improve after each interview.
“The most challenging aspect was not knowing what your interviewer would be like and what they expect from a potential employee,” said Stockton.
Alexa Prince, a freshman psychology major, was interviewed by Rebecca Johnson from Walden Security. She had a mock application for a job in the Tennessee Department of Human Resources as a Social Counselor.
Prince learned how to improve her handshake as well as how to be more specific with her answers. She said you can only be so prepared for an interview but it’s important to research the company before hand so you have a better understanding of what they’re looking for.
“I gained more confidence from the experience,” said Prince. “The interviewer gave me some positive feedback about skills I didn’t even realize I had!”
Emily Bell, a senior psychology major, also interviewed with Rebecca Johnson. Johnson gave her advice on how Bell could improve her interview skills to get the job she wanted and be successful at it.
Bell said, “I left Mock Interview Day with a more optimistic and confident attitude towards obtaining a job after graduation.”
Samantha Burgess is a sophomore majoring in communication with an emphasis in digital media and is an assistant editor for the Triangle. She can often be found curled up with a good book, writing, listening to music or watching TV.
