Lady Lions Volleyball Tame the Lady Tigers

The Lions round out their double conference match weekend with a clean sweep against the Brenau Lady Golden Tigers.

The first set exhibited a point tug-of-war between the two teams throughout the match but ended with the Lions on top. At the last point, the Lions were put back in serve receive, and Abby Cross (Freshman S) cut the Tiger’s feet out from under them with a setter dump to the middle making the final score 25-23.

In the second set, Brenau broke through a series of point ties (3-3, 4-4,5-5) to catch a 4 point lead. This didn’t bind our Lady Lions as they put Jurnee Wilson (Sophomore S) back to serve 8 consecutive points that carried them to 20. At 24, the Lions found themselves in serve receive again and broke through with a drilled kill to the line from Gigi Ford (Junior OH).

In the third and final set, the Lions and Tigers returned to a point tug of war. At 24-17 (Lions), the Lions lost their lead to a swing from the back row; putting them in service to receive a scrappy 4 points. The Lions were put in a position to timeout at 24-21 to regain their momentum and executed their final point with a kill from Abby Rector (Sophomore OH) on the outside for a three-set sweep.

Rector added to her overall 21 kills this weekend with 9 kills on the net. Followed by Ford with her 8 kills and 14 digs.

Anna Cain remained consistent by leading with 5 service aces and 5 block assists.

Elliott Brock (Freshman DS, L) led in defense with 23 digs on the back row.

The Lions will defend their 5-0 record on Tuesday, September 21st at 6:30 against Montreat College in Summers Gym.

After the game, Jurnee Wilson spoke of the 5-0 team’s performance. Wilson applauded the strong lead in serves that the team exhibited as well as the tough defense our blockers and back row put up against the Tigers. “Abby Rector has been on fire the past few games, and has been a key player for when we need a kill,” Wilson highlighted the game-winning kill on the last set, “she (Rector) stuffed it down their throats.”

Wilson’s plan of action for the next game against Montreat college is to come out with substantial leads throughout the game, and not to go point for point. The goal is to shut out the Montreat Cavaliers on Tuesday to rack up their 6th conference win of the season.
