“America, We are Better Than This!”

Oakland, CA–U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) announced her bid for the 2020 presidential race in a speech given on Monday, January 28. The speech, given in the Senator’s hometown of Oakland, wowed many Democrats, but was rejected by many of the Republicans who were disappointed by the promises she made.

Harris’s echoed modern societal themes such as racial profiling in police procedures. “Too many unarmed black men and women are killed in America. Too many black and brown Americans are being locked up.”

This comes in response from the series of shootings and altercations, presumably, between white police officers and black citizens.

Harris also spoke on being very different from our current President Donald Trump, if she wins.

Seek truth, speak truth and fight for the truth. If I have the honor of being your president, I will tell you this: I am not perfect. Lord knows, I am not perfect. But I will always speak with decency and moral clarity and treat all people with dignity and respect. I will lead with integrity. And I will tell the truth.”

Several of Harris’s promises included Obama-era policies such as a single-payer healthcare bill.

The single-payer healthcare bill places every American citizen onto a government-run healthcare insurance plan, which would eliminate the private insurer. This would set the American citizen up to pay more in taxes to cover their insurance costs, yet this will erase any need for the citizen to find an insurance plan of their own.

The bill has been opposed by both conservative lawmakers and citizens, while embraced by left leaning democrats.

Harris also stated her belief in a universal right to a free four year college education for all American citizens, a ban on semi-automatic rifles, the green idea project. The green idea project bans all private vehicles, unless the vehicle is electric and consented by the federal government as “necessary.

While over a year away from the primary and general elections, there are still many candidates from both sides, such as Joe Biden and President Donald Trump, waiting to come out of the shadows to oppose the others.
