The sun is shining brighter and as the temperature rises more Bryan students can be seen scattered around the college campus and Grassy Bowl with blankets and books. Next year when students return to school there may be an additional hot spot for students to enjoy their study time.
Every year the Senior Class Student Government Association (SGA) puts aside funds for the Senior Class to buy a gift for the students.
According to Trent Gay, senior class president, SGA has about $600 set aside for the senior gift.
“I think the senior gift is an excellent opportunity for seniors to leave behind a mark for other students to see and remember the ones that have gone before them and also to contribute something that represents the class,” said senior Meggelles Devaney.
Some of the early ideas for the senior gift included hammocks that could be rented from the library, reopening the café to serve pizza and hamburgers, a swing set or park benches.
Some of the more “outlandish” ideas included a zipline from Long dorm to Latimer Student Center, said Gay.
The Senior SGA is leaning toward buying benches for around the grassy bowl Gay said.
“We tried to come up with something that would enhance the community…a lot of times students go out to the Grassy Bowl to study or look at the stars, but the dew has just fallen and the ground is wet.”
“We thought that benches would be awesome because people always have to bring their blankets to the grassy bowl. A lot of guys I know don’t have blankets because we don’t go out and have picnics unless we have girlfriends,” said Senior Representative Joseph Maughon.
The benches will be more comfortable than the current benches around campus and made from recycled plastic so that they will last longer.
The type of bench the Senior SGA is looking at buying cost about $500 apiece.
“We were hoping on buying two or three benches,” said Gay, “but [in order to do so] we may be looking into getting funding from local hardware stores.”
“I think a bench is an excellent idea, but I think a tree house would be better,” Devaney said.
If seniors would like to give their input on the senior gift they are encouraged to contact the Senior Class Senators: Joseph Maughon and Allison McLean.
The senior gift must be decided on before the end of the semester.
The Senior SGA has not officially decided what the class gift is going to be, but it wants it to be something that students will use for a long time, said Maughon.
