This week’s Guess Who professor was invited to Bryan College, along with her husband, by the chairman of the department in the fall of 1978. Before coming to Bryan, she started working on her doctorate but was not able to complete her full residency. Therefore, she and her husband took a sabbatical from Bryan for a year to complete her residency.

She lived in Dayton for 26 years, and 14 of those years were spent on Bryan Hill so she could walk to campus. Now, she resides in Chattanooga because it is closer to her oldest daughter, a graduate of Bryan, her son-in-law and two of her grandchildren, who are both boys.

Her youngest daughter, also a graduate of Bryan, lives in California with her husband and this professor’s third grandchild, a girl.

In her younger years, this professor was a varsity cheerleader. She enjoyed outdoor activities such as archery and fishing with her grandfather.

During her free time, which is summer and scheduled breaks, she said she enjoys “puttering” around in the kitchen and experimenting with new recipes. During the academic year, she uses quick recipes often in a crock pot.

She has an artistic flair and a love for painting and sculpting, which she experimented with in her younger years.

“I’d love to do something in visual arts when I retire,” she said.

Along with her love of the arts, this professor is an avid reader when she has time. She has an interest in a wide variety of genres including mysteries, nonfiction, rescue stories, inspirational novels and interior decorating books.

Her favorite movies include those based on the novels of Jane Austen and Elizabeth Gaskell, the author of Wives and Daughters.

Apart from the arts, this professor enjoys watching basketball and soccer games at Bryan. She was able to attend a lot of the soccer games in recent years because her brother-in-law’s step –son was the goalkeeper.

Attempting to keep up with her husband and daughter, who are avid sports fans, she is memorizing the college and professional basketball, football and baseball teams for each city. Her husband will quiz her on a regular basis, which is not only fun for her but helps her remember the teams

In regard to her department, she thinks it is perfect.

“We have, at least three of us, been together for three decades, and it is a wonderful working relationship,” she said.

According to this professor, Bryan is a great community where the faculty respects and supports each other. The faculty women join for a dinner regularly.

“It is difficult to find time for fellowship,” she said, “So these are really special times.”

She enjoys the classes she teaches due to the small size and opportunity for one-on-one time.

“I really get involved in their lives and have a personal relationship with the students in and out of the classroom,” she said.
