Cheaper option for summer internships

Beginning this summer, students who are required to complete an internship will have more options to do so than before, according to Academic Vice President Bradford Sample.

Previously, students who wanted to do a summer internship were required to pay $235 per credit hour. Students will now be allowed to do the work for an internship in the summer term and earn academic credit for completing related assignments in the fall term. All fees will be subsumed by normal tuition costs.

Few concrete details have been released about the new requirements and how they differ from the previous summer internship requirements. Read full story »

Jonathan Davis, AAC Player of the Week

Junior shortstop Jonathan (J.D.) Davis from Fayetteville, Ga., was named Appalachian Athletic Conference Player of the Week for his performance in the three game series against University of Virginia College at Wise on Mar. 5 and 6.

“The AAC takes nominations from sports information directors around the conference and then picks the player who had the best statistical week,” Head Baseball Coach Taylor Hasty said.

Davis went 6 for 10 at the plate with a slugging average of .800 and three stolen bases, according to Hasty. Read full story »

On Sunday afternoon, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to send a voluminous healthcare bill to President Barack Obama for his signing. The bill will expand government healthcare in America to a near universal system.

Along with many changes, 32 million uninsured Americans will receive government aid, taxes for those who are already insured will increase, Medicaid funding will be cut back while somehow expanding the program,, and insurance companies will be prevented from refusing coverage on the basis of pre-existing medical conditions. If all goes according to plan, deficits will decrease over the next 20 years.

Last Saturday night at 8 p.m., four worship teams conducted one of the most elaborate worship events ever held at Bryan College. The event, Respond, was orchestrated by Seniors Timmy Sunday and Alicia Schulze and junior Patrick Roberts.

The purpose was to lead a worship service unlike any other, a service that would promote action, not just singing, and would evoke a prayerful mindset, not a passive gesture of piety. This was the goal of these three Bryan students, and the result was a thing of beauty, according to Sunday.

Sunday, Schulze and Roberts contacted no fewer than 30 churches in an invitation to join with Bryan students to seek God and pursue justice in the world. They also made arrangements to receive food donations for the Chattanooga Rescue Mission and money donations for Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee Company in Rwanda.

Meet Kelly Findley, VP of Finance Elect

kelly findleyMy name is Kelly Findley and I am currently a freshman here at Bryan. I am a double major in Mathematics and Politics and Government, and my favorite hobby is playing the piano. I am really excited about this opportunity to work on Executive SGA with a great team of people. I hope that you all will see us as approachable people, available to listen to ideas and to serve you in every way that we can.

While VP of Finance does not exactly sound like the most exciting job, I do have several goals in mind over the next year. My primary goal is to set a standardized way of keeping financial records among class SGAs that is both easy to keep and easy to understand. I would also like to stress the importance of making complete class budget predictions at the beginning of the year based on prior class budgets.

I won’t bore you all with any more details, partly because I don’t know all the details myself. And as far as this rumor goes about me siphoning extra money to my own class next year, that will just have to be one of those details I’m not going to bore you with.
