Numerous opportunities exist for volunteers who wish to spread a little bit of Christmas cheer to families who are in need of gifts, coats and other necessities.

There has been an increase of families who need help this Christmas season, said Margie Legg, executive assistant to the president at Bryan College.

The Rhea County Sheriff’s Department is accepting applications from families in need of help. After the sheriff’s department receives an application, someone is sent to the family’s home to assess their needs. Read full story »

Fresh Ideas: Mr. Potatohead

It is Dec. 24, 1996 and I am 7, living in Honolulu, Hawaii. I believe firmly that Santa Claus is real, has a flying, magical sleigh pulled by a team of reindeer and a belly full of Christmas cheer.

It is bedtime, and my parents have made that dreadfully clear as they order my younger brother Jacob and I to our shared bedroom to go to sleep for the night. My brother and I then lay awake for a half hour, talking about all the wonderful things that Santa could possibly bring us the next day. We then, as every kid normally does, made a pact to stay up all night and catch Santa in the middle of the night as he unloaded mounds of presents under our tree. Read full story »

Can men and women be “just friends?”

Kevin McEwen

The question often arises when a guy spends more than the “normal” amount of time with any one girl: “Is there something going on between you two?” Often, the response of “no” is met with disbelief or a knowing wink. Is it socially acceptable or even possible for a guy to have a good female friend? Could this girl be as close as a sister? From personal experience and some detailed research into the psychological and social studies conducted, I would sadly have to say that in today’s culture, and even here at Bryan College, the answer is no.

This should not be the case. The Bible mandates to love as brethren. We, the men of Christ, are called to guard and protect our sisters. This brings friendships to a deeper level if done in the proper context, through the power of Christ and leading of the Lord. Unfortunately, it would seem that our society is determined to prevent this from happening.

Christmas banquet exceeds expectations

Ice sculpture takes center stage at this year's Christmas Banquet

Ice sculpture takes center stage at this year's Christmas Banquet

While there is much to be said for this year’s Christmas banquet, held Saturday, Dec. 5, the whole of it can be summed up in three words: simple, elegant and outstanding. The senior class SGA [Student Government Association] clearly outdid themselves as the engaging entertainment, succulent dinner and glistening décor not only met guests’ expectations but in a lot of ways surpassed them.

Taking a somewhat different approach to entertainment, the senior class, rather than draw attention to the stage, brought the fun right to the tables as guests partook in a gingerbread house-building competition and an outlandish white elephant gift exchange monitored by senior senators Joseph Maughon and Allison McLean. The decorations, emanating a woodsy atmosphere, consisted of a rather large Christmas tree, several other lighted trees and a swan-shaped ice sculpture. And, to cap the Christmas spirit off, the weather outside was freezing. Read full story »

From a philosophical fish store and the portrayal of fantastical, psychedelic highs to the story of a man awaiting the return of his single, picture-framed heart, students last week laughed, cried and left impressed with the films shown in the Monday and Wednesday chapels.

“I thought it was great, I would like to see more,” junior Glenna Gibbs said Wednesday. Read full story »
