Men’s basketball expects better season

The Bryan College men’s basketball team is gearing up for the season with new recruits and returning players led by Head Coach Don Rekoske and New Assistant Coach Kyle Terry.

Terry graduated from Bryan last year and played under Rekoske. He has been named Rekoske’s assistant coach for the 2009-2010 season. In his senior year Terry shot 39.6 percent from behind the arc and hit a career high of seven three-pointers in one game. Along with being named Academic-All Conference for three years, Terry was also Academic All-American for his junior and senior years.

“He brings a good understanding of the program and already has the entire team’s respect in the locker room,” said Rekoske. Read full story »

AAC player of the week: Zach Buffington

Junior cross country runner Zach Buffington named AAC player of the week.

Zach Buffington, a junior from Ooltewah, Tenn., was named the Appalachian Athletic Conference Men’s Track and Field/ Cross Country Runner of the Week two weeks ago for his performance at the

Berry Invitational Sept. 12. Buffington finished fourth out of 174 runners.

“He deserved it. He ran faster than anyone else in the conference,” said Head Cross Country/ Track and Field Coach Rodney Stoker.

ACC player of the week: Amber Smith

Volleyball senior Amber Smith, AAC player of the week.

Ever since senior Amber Smith’s freshman year, a coach has nominated her for the Appalachian Athletic Conference Player of the Week in volleyball for her standout performance on the court,. Two weeks ago, an official in the conference once again chose Smith as the AAC Player of the Week.

Smith, from Pompano, Fla, has played volleyball since sixth grade and has played both middle blocker and right side hitter.

Ties cause freshmen election runoff

This week seven students were elected to be the freshman Student Government Association (SGA) members on campus. However, unlike previous elections on campus the outcome of the first voting resulted in four of the offices still being contested because of near ties.

Several factors played a role in making this class’s election unlike all others and set the stage for the unprecedented runoffs.

Strong participation by both voters and candidates was one such change. Out of an estimated 195 incoming freshmen on campus, approximately 180 of them voted in this election, according to the newly elected freshman Senator Peter Boyajian. Read full story »

Overall enrollment rises in economic decline

Bryan’s enrollment continues to increase in spite of the recession.

Overall enrollment for this year is at 1,148, according to Tom Davis, director of public information. Last year’s overall enrollment was 1,079. The Aspire Program is up this year with 305 students as opposed to last year’s 248 . However, on campus, the current traditional enrollment is 726, down a little from last year’s 749 students.
